Is snaking a drain the same as augering?
Yes. Snake, auger, drain rod and plumber's snake all describe a rotating cable used to clear a drain.
How do I know where my clog is?
Look at which fixtures are affected. One fixture means its trap or trap arm; one room or wall means a branch; many fixtures, or the basement floor drain backing up when upstairs water runs, means the main. The Clog Locator tool automates this.
What size auger do I need for a sink?
A hand drum or drill-powered auger with 1/4-inch cable. Bathroom sinks are usually 1-1/4-inch drains and kitchen sinks 1-1/2 inch.
What size auger do I need for a main sewer line?
Typically a drum machine with 1/2 to 3/4-inch cable or a sectional machine with 5/8 to 7/8-inch cable for a 4-inch line, with 75 to 100 feet or more of reach.
Can I use a regular snake on a toilet?
It is not recommended. Use a closet auger, which has a guarded bend that protects the porcelain and aims the cable into the trapway.
Why does my floor drain back up when I do laundry?
The washer's discharge surges into a partly blocked building drain or lateral and rises to the lowest opening, the floor drain. Treat it as a main-line warning.
Can I auger through a backwater valve?
No. Open the valve's access cover and route the cable past the flap as the manufacturer describes, then reinstall and test the valve.
Where is the main sewer cleanout?
Usually in the basement at the base of the stack or in the floor near the wall facing the street. Some homes also have an exterior cleanout in the yard.
Is it safe to auger a main line myself?

Can a blocked vent look like a clog?
